When Sol Mercado was born, her father gave her a name that means "sun" in Spanish because she was the sunshine of his life. But for many years, sunshine was hard to come by for Sol. When she was 19, she shot and killed a rival gang member in California and served 16 years in prison as a result. SOL IN THE GARDEN is a short documentary supported by TIME Studios, The Sundance Institute and the Kendeda Fund as part of a series addressing gun violence in this country.
